The Group was founded in 1997. It includes the material scientific institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft as well as one institute of the Fraunhofer IuK-Group.

The total budget of the Group's institutes amounts to more than 220 Million Euros for the year 2008. This underlines the importance of material research in Germany. Overall about 1700 people are employed in the Group. More than 1000 people of the employees are scientists.
