Optical communications technology has already staked out the global market over long distances, creating significant surplus capacities. Developments have advanced to a much lesser extent in shortrange technology, although there are great efforts being undertaken to devise powerful and cost-effective components such as polymer optical waveguides, optical switches and coupler grids or microlens arrays.
