Displays are the prime human-machine interfaces. Flat displays today are dominated by liquid-crystal technology that has also won the market of largeformatand high-resolution displays.
Light-emitting diodes based upon organic (polymer or oligomer) materials (OLED) have only become recently known. They have, however already been commercialized in first display and other light engineering applications.
As soon as service life problems are solved for full polymer devices, they will be able to tap a major potential for new applications in display and lighting technology since they are flexible and can be molded into virtually any shape. Something all of these applications require is smart »light management« where microstructured surfaces can provide crucial benefits (such as light decoupling, scattering and antireflection).
